Construction Completed for Japan’s first bio-ETBE Production Plant at Negishi Refinery
~Establishment of a domestic biogasoline production plant~

Nippon Oil Corporation (President: Shinji Nishio) is pleased to announce that the company, through its refining arm Nippon Petroleum Refining Company, Limited (President: Hiroshi Ono), has completed construction of a new production plant for bio-ETBE (Ethyl Tertiary-Butyl Ether), the raw material for biogasoline, at Negishi Refinery (Plant Manager: Yoshihiko Maehara), with an annual production capacity of 100,000KL. A groundbreaking ceremony was held today for this, Japan’s first-ever bio-ETBE production plant.

Since April 2007, Negishi Refinery has been engaged in the production and shipment of biogasoline using imported bio-ETBE as a raw material. This newly constructed production plant now enables the refinery to produce bio-ETBE using bioethanol manufactured domestically in Hokkaido that has already been procured. In this manner, the refinery is now able to produce biogasoline primarily using domestically produced bioethanol.

Following scheduled trial operation, operation of this new production plant will begin at the end of November and biogasoline, containing the bio-ETBE produced through this new plant, will be available at approximately 1,000 ENEOS service stations* located in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Yamanashi, Saitama, Nagano, Gunma and Tochigi.

Apart from Negishi Refinery, the Nippon Oil Corporation Group will begin shipment of biogasoline, produced with imported bio-ETBE, through its oil refineries and terminals beginning in Fiscal 2010 after these facilities become ready to begin supplying biogasoline.
